English ‘GENERATING IDEAS’
5 WAYS OF
GENERATING IDEAS from Musa Sinnan
1) USE
PREVIOUS EXPERIENCE
-you may
have ur own experience related to a given topic in the continuous writing.
Based on ur personal experience modifly the ideas to match the topic given.
e.g :
Students should be allowed to bring handphones to school. Do you agree?
Based on
ur experience having ur own handphone, make a general statement or idea on
behalf other students whwther u would want to bring ur handphone to school or
not.
2) USE
BRAINSTORMING SESSION
- This
can be done by playing two roles at the time. Based on the topic given, u ask
several questions as generated in ur mind. Then, force ur mind to think of
several answers which then u jot them down. Choose and arrange ur own
brainstormed answer forming the main ideas or supporting details
Ouestion:
Should i
agree?
Is it an
important item whwn we are in school?
Why is it
necessary fruit to be brought to school?
Am i really
desperate it to bring it to school?
Will there be a
problem if everyone brings theirs?
For emengency
cases,it is helpful?
Will the
students be misusing the handphone?
Is it harmful if
they are misused?
Will the
teachers be able to control its abuse?
Can we have a
peaceful mind without the handphone?
Am i too busy
requiring me to contact others while schooling?
Will there be
any gap between the rich and poor students?
Is it
troublesome if someone lost his/her handphone?
3) PLAN
AND ORGANISE UR IDEAS
This can
be done using planning strategies such as mind-map,outling or preparing flow
chart
e.g:
Seaside
Fish
Smell Salt
Gentle
Waves Roar
seaside Sight people children playing
Little
Sounds waves large
4) THINK
OF RELATED WORD
- try to
list down as many word as possible related to the topic or issue given
especially in the continuous writing. If we take the example mentoned earliest
‘ seaside’, i am sure there are others words that u can thinks of to describe
it.
E.g:
Picnic
Aldult
Sand
Motor-boats
Umbrellas
Dustbins
Chatting
Shells
Rocks
Sandcastles
Sunglasses
Signboaads
Coconut tress
Swimming
Ships
Beach
lifeguard
5) USE
COMPARISONS
-
sometimes u may not be able to find a word that will describe exactly what u
want to say. When this happens, u may use a comparison. We compare the thing we
want to describe with something else we know that looks, smells, sounds, tastes
or feels like it.
e.g:
The golden
sand - the sand looks like gold
The water
was cold - the water was as cold as ice
The
children were happy - the children were as happy as birds
The air
smells nice - the air smells as fresh as newly-cut
grass
